PRX PROFILES STEVE Birthdate: December 18th Education: MBA - USC. BA in
Economics/Rhetoric-UC Davis. Go Aggies--fight on! Running History: Ran track throughout middle/jr. high school, then started running cross country at Washington High School in the city. Many of my finest, yet most physically-brutal, adolescent days were spent running after school in Golden Gate Park, where we raced and had cross country practices. Ran first marathon at age 15, and will be running my 21st next Spring at the Boston Marathon. Nowadays, I usually train 4-5 months out of the year for a marathon, and do alot of cross-training and less running during the rest of the year. Miles per week: When Im in training, about 50MPW, plus alot of aqua-running, elliptical training, and lower body weights. Injuries have forced me to run less, and crosstrain more. Paces: 6:30 minute marathon pace,
but otherwise I never wear a watch when I run, so I dont know my exact paces. It
depends on who Im running with, and if Im running casually or racing. So from 5K to
the marathon, my paces can vary from 5:30-10 minute miles. Best Running Experience: San Francisco Marathon 1999. I had knee surgery 10 months prior to that and didnt think I'd be running much anymore. Just getting through training for that post-op marathon tops everything for me...... But then my triple, '3-in-3' weeks marathon ordeal in 2002 was pretty memorable too. Ran the WDC, Paris, and Boston Marathons in 3 weeks, in 2:54, 3:05, and 2:52, respectively. I had a 2:40-something marathon in me just screaming to get out, but instead I chose to go gorge in Paris.......and have no regrets about it! However, in this lifetime, I will never come close to 2:40-something again. Stupid knee. Worst Running Experience: Rock N Roll Marathon 1998. Had been having serious knee issues for almost a year, and my knee swelled up to the size of a grapefruit during the marathon. 3 months later, I went under the knife. The 40 minute delay at the start of the race and the 70 degree temperatures didnt help either. Miserable. Diet: Uncontrollable. Can easily eat an entire Entenmann's NY Crumb Cake in one sitting. If Im in training, my eating habits are monotonous and tasteless. I eat low fat, high carb/protein, lotsa chicken, couscous, and pasta--the Mediterranean thing. Immediately after a marathon, baklava is a post-race favorite. If Im not in training, anything goes--high fat, high sodium, liberal servings, and lotsa Chinese and Mexican food. Injuries: Several. Bum knee, due to chewing up all the cartilage, led me to surgery in 1998. Then in 2000, overtraining led to "compartment syndrome" in both calves, leading to more surgery on both legs. Knees arent perfect today, but are still alot better than they were before surgery. Important thing is my condition is manageable and I can still run. Next time we meet, ask me to show you my scars. Non-Running Interests: Mountain biking, hiking, rollerblading, travel. Recently lived in HK, China, and Korea for a few years, and like to see new countries when I can But there's nothing better than running an overseas marathon to pack in some good travel, running, and FOOD. Ive intentionally run marathons in Paris, Athens, and Torino just as an excuse to travel and eat. The marathons were secondary. Who would star as you in the Hollywood story of your life? Considering there arent really any Asian-American actors, I wouldnt have much of a choice and would have to import talent from Hong Kong. Aesthetically, probably Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li, or Long Duck Dong from Sixteen Candles, but none of these guys speaks English fluently, so my movie would be in Cantonese with English subtitles. Aiyaah.
