KUOMINTANG
AAIYAAH!
These photos
were taken by my Grandfather in San Francisco's Chinatown during World War II. In
"The Rice Bowl Party", participants carried the flag of the Kuomintang
(Nationalist Party of China) along Grant Street, gathering support for Chiang Kai Shek and
the war against Japanese aggression in China and the rest of Asia. Bystanders along
the parade route can be seen tossing money onto the flag and into huge "rice
bowls". As the war against the Japanese turned into a civil war between the
Chinese Nationalists and Communists, the Kuomintang still received strong support from
Chinatowns across the U.S.
(Note: The flag above is that of Taiwan, Republic of China; had a bit of trouble finding a Kuomintang graphic.)
